Design Considerations

Designs may explore expressive shaping, carving, and material articulation, provided they remain within the approved dimensional limits. Designers are encouraged to think sculpturally while prioritizing durability, longevity, and the practical realities of handling and shipping.

Material removal is welcomed as a means of reducing weight, so long as structural strength and permanence are maintained. Delicate or protruding elements should be approached with care and reinforced or simplified where necessary to minimize risk during transport and long-term display

Maximum Dimensions & Weight

Maximum Size: 4″ × 6″ × 12″
Approximate Weight: A solid stone block at maximum size weighs approximately 18 lbs. Final weight will vary based on carving and material removal
All designs must remain within these limits.

Engraving & Permanence

Designers are encouraged to incorporate the award year and chapter designation directly into the stone through carving. Applied plaques or secondary materials should not be proposed. Carved engraving reinforces the values of permanence, material honesty, and craftsmanship central to the John Staub Awards tradition.
